Minister of Trade and Industry
Nevine Gamea has met with the World Bank (WB) Group delegation led by Ayat
Soliman, the regional Director for the WB Group's Sustainable Development
Department for the Middle East and North Africa (MNA) region.
The meeting reviewed the latest about
the report prepared by the bank, in cooperation with 25 countries including
Egypt, on the effects of climate change and ways to combat it.
“Egypt is keen to expand
cooperation with its international partners in ways to adapt to climate change
and green recovery, as well as diversify energy sources,” Gamea said.
The ministry, she added, is working
on raising the awareness among manufacturers and investors of the need to
consider environmental conditions and climate change, which would help in
protecting the environment and people’s health, in addition to enhancing the competitiveness
of local products, especially on markets that impose strict environmental controls
on imports.
Gamea further pointed to the
ministry’s efforts in this respect: rationalizing energy consumption, producing
green hydrogen and recycling agricultural waste into raw materials.
Soliman, for her part, pointed out
that a draft of the report will be ready by May, and the final version will be presented
at the COP27 climate summit, to be hosted by Egypt this year.
