Minister of Trade and Industry Nevine Gamea has opened the launch conference of the operation of a solar photovoltaic unit in Alexandria’s vegetable wholesale market, organized by the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce, in the presence of Minister of Supply and Internal Trade Ali al-Moselhi.

The conference was attended by Mohamed al-Sherif, governor of Alexandria; Christian Berger, head of the European Union delegation to Egypt; Ahmed al-Wakeel, president of the Alexandria Chamber of Commerce and the Association of the Mediterranean Chambers of Commerce and Industry; and Mohamed al-Zallat, head of the General Authority of Industrial Development.

“The government places great importance on expanding the use of clean energy in production and service sectors,” Gamea said.

The minister pointed out that launching the first market operating with clean electric energy comes in line with the government's shift towards clean and renewable energy in order to preserve the environment.

To this end, she noted, the government has adopted a series of policies and strategies, including the Sustainable Development Strategy: Egypt Vision 2030, the Egyptian Energy Strategy until 2035 and the Industrial Development Strategy 2020.

Renewable energy in Egypt represents about 20% of the country’s total energy sources, and is targeted to increase to 42% by 2035, Gamea further added.
