Minister of Trade and Industry Nevine Gamea has announced
that Brazil has received its first shipments of the new season’s crop of Egyptian oranges,
under the free trade agreement signed with South American trade bloc Mercosur,
which includes: Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay and Paraguay.
Ibrahim al-Sigini, assistant minister for economic affairs, said
that a Brazilian technical mission had visited Cairo last year to negotiate a
deal with Egypt on citrus fruit imports, during which they inspected a number
of citrus farms, accompanied by phytosanitary experts from the local plant quarantine.
He added that the Agreements Sector at the ministry had held
a series of meetings with Egyptian businessmen and exporters, in cooperation
with the Brazilian Embassy in Cairo and the Arab Brazilian Chamber of Commerce
in São Paulo, to introduce the customs exemptions and other privileges provided
by the Egypt-Mercosur FTA.
